The broad extensions at the hind legs are characteristic properties of the Macrobiotus  males.


The tardiologist Hartmut Greven writes: "... males of   Macrobiotus hufelandi   and  Hypsibius oberhaeuseri  show characteristic flat extrusions at the outer sides of their last pair of legs."
